MUN Korean Steakhouse
3519 W 6th St, Los Angeles, CA 90020
The few times my family had Korean barbecue was cause for celebration. Usually, my mom would cook up an at home rendition, using pork belly or shoulder and crowding our dining table with various banchan plates, ssam, rice, and meat. By no means was it a sophisticated meal—in fact, the stretchier the waistband of your pants, the better—yet it was a time for celebration. A moment of gratitude for delicious food, family, and connection.
Walking into MUN Korean Steakhouse, the smell of grilled meats and sesame oil immediately took me back to that giddy childhood excitement. The restaurant was dark and elegant, with accented lighting highlighting each table. It was a contrast from the outside world; the atmosphere caused every sense to heighten, pulling the focus to the experience of the meal.
Like many of the institutions in Los Angeles’ Koreatown, the owners, JY Kim and JP Kim, left their lives in Korea to open MUN Korean Steakhouse, building MUN into one of the first upscale Korean restaurants in LA, introducing a new atmosphere and experience for what “Korean barbecue” could be. The result was a restaurant that marries upscale hospitality with the comfort of family recipes, like their home-style japchae, which was full of rich sesame flavor. They also serve their own MUN STEW, a deeper and richer version of soybean paste stew, which served as a perfect introduction to the feast of meat ahead.
The DATE NIGHT serves 2-3 people and comes with ribeye, beef belly, and marinated boneless short ribs. This particular option will set you back $110 + tax, but leave you very full, happy, and with the memory of an unforgettable meal. Each cut is displayed tableside before being perfectly prepared, beginning with the tender beef belly and later moving into the richer and marbled ribeye and marinated short ribs.
So, the verdict:
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, having a date night, or simply looking for a truly special dining experience, MUN Korean Steakhouse encapsulates the spirit of quality celebration. They have mastered the craft of elevated Korean dining: celebrating the rich culture of Korean barbecue in an experience that leaves your heart and your stomach very full.
