J Korean Resetaurant

210 N. Western Ave, #103, Los Angeles, CA 90004

I often find myself craving a meal, not for what I order off the menu, but for the assortment of banchan dishes that fight for space on a crowded dining table. It’s these complimentary side dishes that ignite a flurry of chopsticks, bumping elbows, and outstretched arms that reach over the table throughout the meal, searching for contrasting bites and flavors. To me, the sign of a truly Korean meal are banchan dishes left with a singular, selfless bite of each left; nobody dares to take the last piece.

If you thought that Korean dining tables were already crowded, J Korean Restaurant will have you rethink that concept as they present their homestyle hanjeongsik, a full-course meal traditionally prepared for royal courts. You’ll watch in awe (in my case, mouth slightly agape) as the table you’re sitting at gets overtaken by a large board overflowing with more than thirty dishes, neatly sliding on top of the table.

Menu

There’s countless ingredients, flavors, textures, and dishes that make up this meal. Most notably, you’ll find a grilled yellow croaker taking center stage along with other main protein dishes like galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), boiled ox head, and boiled beef tendon. And of course, there are countless other bites offered as well, from an assortment of jeon (Korean savory pancakes), to various forms of pickled radish, fried eggplant, candied nuts, and more.

And just when you’re ready to sit back and unbutton your jeans, more plates appear on the table, leaving not an inch of space to waste. There’s about a bite's worth for each dish, from salted pollock roe, to dried anchovies, raw marinated crab, and—you guessed it—even more. And finally, you’re presented with a light dessert: a frozen persimmon, walnut-stuffed dates, and a sweet and warming dessert punch (sujeonggwa).

Our verdict:

J Korean Restaurant presents a meal that is truly unique and encapsulates the communal essence of Korean dining. The variety of dishes represent the breadth of Korean cuisine, allowing you to enjoy the true experience of trying a range of textures, flavors, and ingredients.
